If You’re A Genius…

If you’re on social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) you’ve seen them: math problems that are posted with titles like “if you’re a genius, solve this” or “99% of people fail solving this”.

These are typically very simple math problems, that any elementary school child can solve. Here’s an example:


What amazes me is how many people get these wrong. The above problem was posted on LinkedIn (which is annoying in and of itself; LinkedIn is not Facebook!), which is a social network for business people. One would assume these are people who have had at least elementary school education. And yet, so many got it wrong.

I can’t figure this out. Are these people writing down wrong answers on purpose?
