For about a year now, I’ve been working for a US company. My boss and my colleagues are mostly American. After many years working for an Israeli boss, I had to explain why I can’t take phone calls or check emails on Shabbat. The concept of a total shutdown, no matter what, was alien to many of my colleagues (unless they happened to work with an Orthodox Jew in the past, of course).
Eventually, thanks to the brothers Joel and Ethan Cohen, I found a way to explain. I refer people to the following clip from “The Big Lebowski” (and with it a link to the Shomer Shabbat entry on Wikipedia) and it works like a charm!
